Police: Iowa woman said she hit teen with car because she was 'a Mexican'

An Iowa woman is facing attempted murder charges stemming from a hit-and-run incident that police believe was racially motivated.

Police said that on Dec. 9, Nicole Marie Poole Franklin of Des Moines hit a 14-year-old as she was walking on the sidewalk in Clive, Iowa, and then fled the scene.

Investigators determined that the hit-and-run was intentional after Franklin, 42, said she hit the teen because she was "a Mexican," KCCI reported. Franklin also reportedly made derogatory remarks about Latinos while speaking with investigators.
The hit-and-run victim was injured and later woke up in the snow, KCCI reported.

"I want to say in the strongest terms possible that there is no place in our community, or any community for that matter, for this type of hatred or violence," Clive Police Chief Michael Venema told KCCI. "We are committed to stand by and support this family and work diligently with them to seek justice."

Franklin was also charged with assault after police said she used racist terms toward a clerk at a West Des Moines convenience store and threw items at the clerk around the time of the hit-and-run.

Franklin is being held on $1 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 30.

 

She’s obviously not well, needs a doctors care and some medication.

She was lucid enough to tell the police she targeted this girl for vehicular homicide because the girl appeared to be Mexican. Is that evidence of mental illness or just a disagreement about how to handle the invasion of our southern border?

Iowa Woman Who Said She Attacked Teen Because She Was ‘Mexican’ Also Struck Black 12-Year-Old, Police Say

Police in Iowa now say that before Nicole Marie Poole Franklin targeted a 14-year-old girl with her SUV, she also struck a 12-year-old black child in Des Moines.



The Iowa woman who has admitted that she intentionally ran over a young teen girl with her SUV because she was “Mexican” also struck a 12-year-old black boy just minutes earlier, police said.

Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, was charged on Friday with attempted murder after allegedly using her Jeep Grand Cherokee to strike 14-year-old Natalia Miranda, who was on a sidewalk near her middle school at around 5 p.m. on Dec. 9. Franklin “ran the girl over” and fled the scene, police have said.

But on Monday night, Franklin was charged with a second count of attempted murder after police determined that, before striking Miranda, she had tried to run down a 12-year-old black boy with her SUV, The Des Moines Register reported.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Franklin accelerated before hitting the boy, who was reported to have suffered minor injuries in the incident near a Des Moines apartment complex. Sgt. Paul Parizek, of the Des Moines police, told the newspaper that the boy’s race, combined with the other incidents, have led police to believe Franklin was attacked him with “hate-filled motivation.”

About an hour after Miranda was hit, police arrested Franklin at a Conoco gas station, where she had allegedly stolen merchandise and called employees and customers racial and ethnic slurs.

Part of the episode at the gas station was caught on video by a customer, and the footage shows a woman who appears to be Franklin saying, “You’re a fucking n-----.” Before she leaves with a police officer, Franklin can be heard saying to customers and employees of color, “Someone’s coming for you guys.”

Officers also reported that she admitted smoking methamphetamine within five hours of the gas station incident, according to KCCI-TV.

“Franklin told investigators that she ran the girl over because she was, in her words, ‘a Mexican,’” Clive Police Chief Michael Venema said in a press conference last week. “She went on to make a number of derogatory statements about Latinos to the investigators.”


“I want to say, in the strongest terms possible, that there is no place in our community—or any other—for this type of hatred and violence,” he said. “We are committed to stand by and support this family and work diligently with them to seek justice.”

Miranda suffered “numerous” serious injuries and spent several days at a hospital before she was able to return to school a week later. She told KCCI-TV that she remembers the vehicle coming toward her but cannot recall being hit.

“I was in the hospital and I tried moving, and I couldn’t get out of my bed,” said Miranda. “Sitting up was the worst pain I've ever felt.”

Police have said Franklin will likely face a felony hate-crime charge in addition to the two attempted murder charges. Authorities also charged her with violation of individual rights, theft, public intoxication, and possession of a controlled substance.


Public records show that Franklin had an extensive criminal history before these alleged events, beginning in the mid-1990s through present day. Her record includes multiple convictions for theft, escape of misdemeanant from custody, tampering with a witness or juror, misdemeanor assault, and operating a vehicle while under the influence, among other charges.

She was still booked in at the Polk County Jail on Tuesday in lieu of a $1 million-plus cash bail.

An Iowa judge set $1 million bond for a woman who allegedly went on a drunken, hate-filled hit-and-run spree which injured two young people of color, authorities said.

Nicole Poole faces up to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of a 12-year-old black boy and a 14-year-old Latino girl, said investigators with Des Moines Police Department.

According to the police report, Poole was driving an SUV nearby Creston Avenue on Dec. 9 around 4 p.m. when she jumped the curb, knocked down the little boy and drove off. The child suffered cuts and swelling to his right shin.

Less than an hour later in Clive, Poole allegedly mowed down the teenage girl as she was walking to school to watch a basketball game. The girl suffered a concussion and severe bruising and was hospitalized for two days.

Poole, 42, was arrested minutes later at a nearby gas station where she was allegedly threw items at a clerk and directed racial epithets at him and customers, the Associated Press reported.

Initially police did not connect the two hit-and-run incidents until video was provided and witness statements lead them to believe Poole's actions were intentional.

"Looking at the three incidents collectively, the hate-filled motivation is apparent," said Sgt. Paul Parizek in an email to ABC News on Tuesday. "The collective voice of metro law enforcement, and the communities we serve, is sending the message that if you commit biased-based crimes, we will charge you with the most serious offense applicable, with the most severe consequences. In this case, that charge is attempted murder."

Poole declined to make statements to Des Moines Police investigators when she was arrested, officials said.

Poole was charged was two counts of intentional murder, assault, fifth degree theft, possession of a controlled substance and consumption/intoxication, according to Iowa jail records. If convicted for the top charges of attempted murder, Poole faces up to 25 years in prison for each count.

Her next court date is on Dec. 30 for the consumption/intoxication charge.
